In 1866, at the youthful age of 19, Thomas Edison, already a proficient telegrapher, ventured to Louisville to join the ranks of Western Union. The company maintained an office at the intersection of Main and Second Streets during that era. However, Edison's journey took an unexpected turn in August of the same year. Initially planning to embark on a trip to Brazil, he encountered an obstacle when he reached New Orleans, as the waterway was temporarily closed. Consequently, he returned to his work in Louisville and secured lodgings in a shotgun duplex located on East Washington Street, now a part of the Butchertown district.
During his time in Louisville in 1867, Edison, ever the relentless experimenter, found himself working the night shift. It was during one such night that he had an incident with a battery, leading to the accidental spillage of sulfuric acid onto the floor, which subsequently seeped onto his boss' desk situated below. Regrettably, this mishap led to Edison's dismissal the following day, marking the end of his tenure in the city.
Sixteen years later, in 1883, Edison's enduring spirit of innovation bore fruit when he introduced one of his groundbreaking inventions—the incandescent light bulb.
